The Kawa Karpo Northern Trail is a 7-day expedition through one of the most sacred and awe-inspiring landscapes on the Tibetan Plateau. Centered around Kawa Karpo (6,740m), the highest peak in Yunnan, this trek combines high-altitude adventure with cultural immersion. The journey takes you through dramatic gorges, ancient forests, and alpine meadows, offering unparalleled views of snow-capped peaks and glaciers. Designed for experienced trekkers, this trek is a perfect blend of physical challenge and spiritual discovery.

HIGHLIGHTS:  

Trekking: 4 days of challenging trekking through remote trails, covering approximately 50 km.  

Cultural Significance: Explore the sacred Kawa Karpo, a revered pilgrimage site for Tibetan Buddhists. 

Scenic Beauty: Dramatic gorges, lush valleys, and panoramic views of the Himalayas.  

Camping Comfort: Enjoy freshly prepared meals, including vegetarian dinners and red wine, with top-quality camping gear.  

ITINERARY

DAY 1: Arrival in Gyalthang (Shangri-La)

Activities: Arrive in Gyalthang, meet your trekking team, and enjoy a welcome dinner at a local restaurant.  

Overnight: Gyalthang. 

DAY 2: Drive to Songpen Village

Activities: Scenic 4-5 hour drive through Jola Pass, with views of the Yangtze River gorges and Tibetan villages. Arrive at Songpen Village for a homestay experience.  

Overnight: Songpen Village. 

DAY 3: Trek Begins – Songpen Village to Zhuli

Activities: Trek 15 km through lush forests and crystal-clear streams, ascending from 3,100m to 3,600m. Camp under the stars.  

Overnight: Camping in Zhuli. 

DAY 4: Trek to Pojun Valley via Sangzong Pass  

Activities: Challenging ascent to Sangzong Pass (5,000m), with breathtaking views of the Himalayas. Descend to Pojun Valley for camping.  

Overnight: Camping in Pojun Valley.  

DAY 5: Summit Day – Zongri Pass (5,200m)

Activities: Trek 7 km to Zongri Pass, the highest point of the trek, with panoramic mountain views. Return to camp for a celebratory evening.  

Overnight: Camping in Pojun Valley.  

DAY 6: Final Trekking Day – Return to Songpen Village

Activities: Trek 14 km through ancient forests and verdant valleys back to Songpen Village. Celebrate the completion of your trek.  

Overnight: Songpen Village or nearby town.  

DAY 7: Return to Gyalthang and Departure

Activities: Drive back to Gyalthang, reflecting on your journey. Depart with unforgettable memories.

TREKKING EQUIPMENT:                                         

Things that we prepare for the trek:

  • Toilet papers.

  • Wet tissue.

  • Hand sanitiser.

  • Quick-dry hand tower.

  • Full camping equipment:

  • Tents.

  • Air mattresses for each person.

  • Air pillow for each person.

  • Camping lamps.

  • Dining sets (table and chairs).

  • Dining tent

  • Toilet tent.

  • All cooking equipment.

  • Plates, cups, bowls, spoons, forks, tissues.


​Things that you need to prepare for the trek:

Clothes:

  • Cap/hat (covers neck and face from Sun).

  • Outdoor waterproof jacket.

  • Fleece (for morning and evening temperature / 10c-15c).

  • T-shirts, two (at least one long-sleeve for protection from Sun).

  • Quick-dry trousers.

  • Raincoat.

  • Trekking boots (waterproof is the best option. If it’s brand new, pls wear them and get used).

  • Cotton socks, two pairs.

Equipment:

  • Backpack, 20-25L (for your daily items, raincoat, packed lunch, water bottle, backpack rain cover).

  • Walking stick (1 for experienced trekker; 2 for beginner).

  • Water bottle (pls bring 1 or 2. We will fill the water one time before the trekking each morning and carry it by us).

  • Sunblock (SPF50+, PA+++).

  • Lipstick for sunscreen and moisture.

  • Sunglasses.

  • Headlamp (for your personal use. We provide the camping lamp for each tent).

  • Camera, and extra batteries for camera (no electricity during the trek).

  • Power bank for your cell phone charges.

  • Sleeping bag.
